Markus Zusak's first book is a brilliant tale of the Wolfe family. Narrator Cameron and his older brother Ruben take up boxing in an underground racket, and while Cameron is not a great boxer, he has heart. By the conclusion of the novel, Cameron has proven to everyone that he is just as much a Wolfe as his undefeated brother. And Ruben has discovered that there's something to fighting more than just winning.

This book is the most realistic tale of brotherhood I have ever read. Zusak shows what it truly means to be family, to be wolves, to be brothers.

(By Don’s daughter)

Cameron and Ruben Wolfe are used to getting into trouble, but this time they’re taking it to a whole new level they’ve become professional fighters. Well, almost. They’ve been offered a contract from a somewhat sketchy underworld businessman. The Wolfe family has been low on money since Cam and Rube’s father’s injury, so the boys figure a little extra money won’t hurt, and their mother doesn’t have to know how they’re getting it, does she?

Not yet, at least.

After a few fights, it’s clear that Ruben was born to be in a boxing ring. Cam tries his best but can’t get the hang of it as well as his big brother. However, Rube isn’t as thrilled as he ought to be over his newfound talents and fame; he almost seems to envy Cam his failures. This worries Cam- although not more than the fine print in the contract that may end up pitting the Wolfe brothers against each other in the arena . . .

This second novel by Marcus Zusak about the Wolfe brothers had all of the best qualities of the first plus a couple of improvements actual character development (besides Cam) and actual plot. Ruben, obviously, shows tremendous growth here; we get to see both a tough, somewhat scary side of him and a loyal, protective side. Even though Cam is failing where Rube succeeds, Rube always supports his little brother and refuses to let anyone take advantage of him. The other family members don’t come in quite so much, but most of them get little subplots Sarah is clearly still recovering from her bad breakup in book one, and Steve and Cam are starting to be on something resembling speaking terms, if not a real brotherly bond. The plot isn’t intricate, but it’s there and it clearly goes somewhere. I especially liked the ending; it’s so much more simplistic than anything I would have come up with, and that’s what makes it so great.

This novel might even work as a stand-alone, but if at all possible, I would read the first, “The Underdog”, which is a pretty good one as well. And believe me, the story of the Wolfe brothers only gets better.
It was not what I expected. Quite unlike "The Book Thief".I have no more words other than I was disappointed.
Very disappointing, the plot is middle of the road and rather predictable. I was suprised as i had read The Book Thief and thought it a very unique book, this is actually why i purchased Fighting Ruben Wolfe.
Great read
Love Markus Zusak!
Not one of his best books, but still a good read. I liked the Book Thief a lot better but it was still pretty good.
Cute book about two young brothers who were close but competitive. They managed to get into boxing to earn money without their parents finding out. I liked the love between siblings.
