This is my favorite re-telling of the Arthurian legend and it is also one of the more unconventional. I would go as far as to say it’s one of my top five favorite books of all time. That being said, I’m not sure it will appeal to all readers and I would hazard a guess that it might appeal more to women than men.

What sets it apart is that the spotlight is cast upon the more misunderstood characters: Guinevere and Mordred. McKenzie describes these two in such a way that you cannot help but empathize with their plights. Both Guinevere and Mordred are richly drawn and multi-faceted. She taps into the emotions of the characters so well that you feel as though you can peer into their souls. Queen of Camelot strongly provoked my emotions, much to my husband’s amusement. I could be found yelling in exasperation, muttering under my breath, and crying in equal measure throughout the duration of this novel. And unlike some authors who manipulatively exploit the emotions of their readers, none of the literary devices that McKenzie employs are gratuitous or cheap. And while this is primarily a character study, McKenzie does not lose sight of the plot.

For a unique perspective on the Arthurian legend that is riveting and character-driven, this book is highly recommended.

This is he best Arthurian legend book I have read since the Crystal Cave series. Very well written.. Full of every component of love, intrigue, and the splendor of the world of knights in shinning armor. Highly recommended to those who love the legend of King Arthur.
This was a very good book, although it started out rather slow. As one reviewer stated, it had the feel of a teenage novel for girls in the first few chapters. However, as Gwen grew older, the writing matured. I also had a hard a time getting used to the first person narrative. I wonder if the story wouldn't have been a little more interesting if it had been told from several different points of view.

I liked that this novel showed Gwen in a more positive light than others. The plot twists will keep you interested throughout the book.

Even though Gwen was supposed to be portrayed positively in this book, there were times when I really didn't like her that much. I think she may have been the kind of woman that women love to hate. All the men around her were constantly telling her how beautiful, smart, etc... she was. Who could blame Elaine for hating her? I know the Gwen/Lancelot/Arthur love triangle is a huge part of the legend, but I had a difficult time with it. She loved both of them equally? And they knew this and accepted it? Maybe they all three needed therapy. There were times when Gwen came across as being downright selfish. She couldn't give herself totally to Lancelot, but she didn't want anyone else to have him. I suppose she expected him to pine away for her forever while she lived it up in Arthur's arms. Aisla, who was the one person who kept Gwen grounded most times, pointed this fact out to her. Last, but not least, she trembled way too much. But, I guess with her complicated love life, her husband trying to hold Britain together, and Merlin creeping around giving her dirty looks she had plenty to be nervous about.

Even though I didn't think Gwen was a great or strong heroine, she was likeable at times and I felt her sorrow at the end. There were many other characters who added to the story and made it a very interesting read. If you are interested in Arthurian literature, I recommend this book. It is a lot like The Mists of Avalon, but not as gritty.
I've been a fan of the Arthurian legends all my life. This telling of the story, from Guinevere's perspective, is at least as good as any I have ever read, including Jack Whyte's Eagles series. The characters are beautifully realized, the explanations for all the events seamless and utterly believable, and the writing was flawless. Not one single malapropism or grammatical error to be found, and such richness of language. This is an extraordinarily beautiful book. Well done!
This is a beautiful book, and I highly enjoyed reading it. McKenzie has brought the characters of Camelot to life in a believable, gripping, suspenseful way. Guinevere is written as strong, feminine, highly sympathetic character who struggles constantly in her role as Arthur's queen—beloved by many but mistrusted and hated by others—and always sad that she is unable to bear a child. Guinevere is also in love with her husband's most trusted knight, Lancelot, but she is fiercely loyal to Arthur and would do nothing to betray him. Though Arthur knows that the two people closest to him in all the world love each other, he trusts them both implicitly and depends on Guinevere to help him through the difficult times of his rule. Those who love historical fiction and romance will love this story with its fascinating look into ancient Britain, and I feel that McKenzie handles the more vulgar parts of the mythology as tastefully as possible. Highly recommended!
This queen weeps, cries, laments, tracks her tears, wets her face, bawls all over the place. I got so TIRED of the tears. It ruined an otherwise fine story.
I loved this retelling of the legend of King Arthur. Guinevere was redeemed for me in this version. I loved the book "Mists of Avalon," but the way Guinevere was depicted made me dislike her beyond what words can describe. However, in this story, she was depicted as being very smart, genuine, unselfish and kind. I also felt she was a victim, and was mistreated and misunderstood at times.

Furthermore, I became emotionally involved with this story and truly felt the pain, love and tribulations of all the characters. I became lost in the magical world that was Britain at that time. The powerful love and romance between the characters was heartwrenching. Arthur was so warm, kind and brave he broke my heart with his undying true love for Guinevere. Lancelot's love borderline obsession with Guinevere, also broke my heart, but I would take Lancelot any day, as he was literally a life saver and constantly risked his life for Guinevere (poor guy).

If you love history, romance, adventure, magic, or tales of King Arthur this is a must read!
