When I was in the second grade, and the other kids picked on me, one day I went to hide in the library, and be left alone. I picked up a book and pretended to read. As long as I was holding it in front of my face, I did start reading it, from the middle. By the time I got to the end, I was hooked, and went back to the beginning and started over. That started a life-long love of science fiction, for me. It was the first science fiction novel I ever read. It was the first book without pictures that I had read all the way through, and I was thrilled at how much brighter and more exciting picture it painted than any of the actual pictures I had seen in books. And so, this book will always hold a special place in my heart.

After that, I moved on to Mrs. Pickerel in Space, and soon was on to Heinlein, who influenced my personality even more significantly than the original Star Trek. Having recently re-read Heinlein, I found things again and again which made me realize where many of my attitudes of youth had come from. :)

A friend mentioned this book in passing and while it sounded familiar from childhood, I couldn't remember the story. Bought this and gulped it down-- wonderful story, well-written, enough science fiction to be believable when I read it the first time, and as an adult it was a great reminder how young minds need that spark of fantasy to escape to.
I read this story many years ago when I was in grade school, and since it stuck with me for so long, I set out to acquire a copy for my library. After all these year I find I still enjoy this story of two adventurous boys, and there mysterious benefactor, Mr. Bass, who in fact ends up receiving a great deal of unexpected benefit for his other-worldly people from his two charges.

The book is "dated" not so much by specific internal references, as simply by style; it was written in another literary era. Definitely a very different flavor from modern scifi, and from modern children's books, but some young readers may still enjoy it, as well as adults with a bent towards nostalgia. I've probably forgotten 99 out of 100 books I read as a child; than I still rememberd this one was, I felt, at least good for four stars.
The first time I read this book, it wasn't long after the first moon landing. The world was fascinated with space travel, which made this adventure all the more thrilling. Over the years I forgot the title, but not the story. I've wanted to share the story with my daughter. I was so happy to find it currently available. I was able to share the adventure and all it's thrills with her, but not until I'd refreshed my memory and read it again myself. Written well before the first moon landing, there are certain errors in space knowledge, but there is actually a great deal more accuracy in some details than one might expect. All the best fun is in the fantasy. This is a very good read for young and old. We'll be reading the rest of Mrs. Cameron's books soon. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys adventure, heroism, and childhood. If Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn were mid-20th century boys, they would want an adventure like this.
I read this in the fifth grade (1964) whilst in Wiesbaden, Germany. I loved it and the sequel.
I have thought often of the book, but couldn't remember the name. My wife Googled my description and, voila! I had found it.
Upon rereading it, I'm stunned that so many of the things that I understand, and am interested in, regarding both space and science fiction were formed while my ten year old mind was frolicking in this magnificently written adventure.
Why did I stumble across this book again after almost 60 years? No other book during the early years of my life captivated me the way this series did. I would frequently, in later years, when in a children's literature section stop to see if this title was even in existence any longer and it didn't pop up until I least expected it. I have been an avid reader ever since my adventures with this little story and credit it with instilling in me the love of a well written, age group specific and now proven timeless classic! Judging from the other readers comments I wasn't the only one mesmerized by this tale.
This story cast a spell on me as a child. Perhaps as all of my playmates were boys, it never occurred to me not to see myself (a girl) right in there with the main characters. I can still almost see the inside of the spaceship, and remember my mental picture of Mr. Bass. I've read a LOT of books since this one, but it still holds a special place in my library. Too bad for those reviewers who didn't think it had enough action - you missed one heck of a journey.
Published in 1954, Eleanor Cameron’s THE WONDERFUL FLIGHT TO THE MUSHROOM PLANET isn’t going to charm modern children, most of whom are too sophisticated to buy into its flyweight mixture of fantasy and ultra-soft science, but it is an entertaining passport to the past for adults who remember it fondly. I myself first encountered the book about 1970 as a throw-away library book, torn cover, dog-eared pages, and bought for a nickel at a fundraiser. It delighted me, and I’ve remembered it fondly ever since.

David and Chuck are impressed when they find a newspaper ad calling for “a small spaceship about eight feet long, built by a young boy, or by two boys, between the ages of eight and eleven.” The ad leads them to meet with Tyco M. Bass, a strangely shaped and elderly man who lives on the oddly named Thallo Street. Mr. Bass engages David and Chuck to create the spaceship—and then endows it with a number of magic-like protections that will enable it to fly to the mysterious satellite planet Basidium to save its dying inhabitants.

The book isn’t high concept or high literature, but it’s fun, a pleasing bit of nostalgia. My regret is that this edition doesn’t seem to contain the illustrations I remember in the rag-tag I had decades ago. Recommended for those who remember it.
