This is a great book, great story and I'm super glad I purchased it and read it. I'm very interested in social justice and this book has a prominent place in that genre. My only complaint is the author needs a better editor - there are places in the book where the editing is so poor that I had to reread it and then try to figure out what actually occurred. It's a shame, hopefully now that social justice SHOULD be a vital subject to all Americans and this author is finding his rightful place on bookshelves as he moves forward with his message he will find an editor to do his very meaningful work the literary justice it deserves.

This is a great follow-up to Tony's first book."15 to Life". This book proves that life in prison does not only ruin the life of the person inside the prison, but that it is devastating to the life of those around the person outside of prison. I have seen Tony Papa on TV many times and I always wondered how he managed once he got out. While it's not a continuation of his new life that I had expected, I am glad to see that Tony has persevered through his art and has become a productive an essential part of today's society. I'm a big fan.
There is a lot of injustice in this world. And then there is Anthony Papa, a man who is an example of exceptional courage, bravery and the unbreakable belief in his own ability to survive an endless series of unprecedented cruel events. This book is an accounting of his life but also life lessons for all of us.

His personal story starts where Anthony was raised in the Bronx where Anthony struggled to be a good person and make ends meet for his family. However, one day he ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time... and that mistake cost him 12 years of imprisonment.

However, that time Anthony spent in prison revealed his true character. He was able to survive life threatening attacks, keep sanity, receive a Master's Degree in Theology, learn how to paint and he fought his way to freedom! Anthony's story is truly inspiring! It gives us a variety of perfect examples of who we are, as human beings, and what we are capable of accomplish at any given situation!

As a former prosecutor and now defense attorney, I can write that I have seen every day of my professional career how difficult it is to reintegrate into society after a stint in prison. Some people have to go to prison (hopefully on only victim crimes), but what we need to realize, as a society, is that punishment is only part of the system and not the solution. Rehabilitation, on the contrary, is the answer. And how we help integrate those parolees is the prime method of proving rehabilitation, which should be the ultimate goal of the criminal justice system.
Mr. Papa has written another very important book. 15 to Life & This Side of Freedom could be a great asset to any criminal justice course. In a time when we need, more than ever, to publish the stories of people with experiences to share as victors in the War on Drugs. As with his first book, the author writes in such a way as to bring each of us along on the journey and to cheer him on as he continues to impact drug law reform in a positive way.
I loved this book. I loved it because in vivid detail I got to go inside Tony's mind and learn about his experience. He had to endure so much pain separation from his family, a victim of draconian drug laws, and a victim of the viciousness of prison life. The fact that he was a nonviolent drug offender and got 15 to Life initially for his crime is an example of the strength of fearful lawmakers in dealing with drugs and drug users. Tony Papa knows that firsthand. I feel I am with him on his journey in life, starting with his first book, 15 to Life. He writes clearly and from the heart. I'll be honored one day to have Tony sign his book for me.
