As a whole, I'd rate this series five stars for its impressive setting and wonderful characters. Me and my little sisters love this series because of the characters. I personally can never get enough of Ripred. He's the best.

But I have to rate this last book four stars because of its conflicting ending.

***WARNING -- SPOILER ALERT***

NEGATIVE POINTS: In this last book, Gregor has a revelation that the prophecies might be false, which I struggle with, because even though Gregor believes they are false, I as the reader do not.

Also, the book's tone is very dark, for kids at least. It's about war, and about growing up, and hard decisions. Not what a child will easily be able to read. It may be hard for them to take, and they may either take it and learn, or finish in tears.

POSITIVE POINTS: However, I do NOT condemn this book for its (for lack of a better word) indecisive ending. I do not really like the confusion and pain of war, but the suspenseful ending, to me, is satisfying. At the end, the reader does not know whether Gregor and co. never see the Underland again. I admit, it does leave the reader feeling slightly cheated. But really, I consider this a positive point because it lets the reader decide. I think Suzanne Collins meant it this way. The reader wants them to move to Virginia, fine! They move to Virginia. The reader wants them to return to the Underland? So be it! The reader can choose.

This series has to be one of the finest I've ever read, despite its dark tone and conflicting ending. The characters are endearing and unforgettable, and the world the Collins creates is beautiful.

Choose for yourself whether you read it. I promise you will not regret it. But be careful with small children; the ending will not go well with them.

Gregor and the Code of Claw Underland Chronicles Book 5 Suzanne Collins 9780439791441 Books Reviews

Just finished reading the last book to my son and we're both so angry at this completely unacceptable ending. After investing five books in these characters and seeing the main character grow so much, accomplish so much, learned so much, the ending is just atrocious. Since I was reading the book aloud to my son I invented a new chapter where Lissie and Boots said that the story had to continue .
The Gregory series by Suzanne Collins has been very successful and the Gregory and The Code of Claw is no exception.

The book immediately picks up right after its prequel book The Marks of Secret. Gregory will face difficult challenges with luxa and his friends as well as an old enemy becoming a friend.

The The Code of Claw gets a 4.5. It kept my attention throughout the entire book except for the end, the ending was to predictable and was not like its prequels. In each prequel something strange happened someone die or something big occurred with Gregory this always kept you thinking but at the end of The Code of Claw it loose this unpredictability.

Obviously if you liked the other books you will like this one. It is a good book I would definitely suggest it if you are a younger reader about 9-16 although you could definitely enjoy it if you were older because of its seriousness and slightly bloody content. Overall I think most people could like this book because of its variety.
I started the Overlander series in order to pre-read it for my 10 year old daughter and 9 year old son. I got hooked and just finished book 5! I loved book 5 simply because I loved the series. The bottom line is that the end of book 5 left my 10 year old daughter in tears, feeling like the book series had just dumped her off on a corner.) She was left wanting an explanation for what happened to the characters that she fell in love with and invested so much time in. My 9 year old son is on book 2 and I'll let him continue as I'd rather he over invest in a book than not read at all. )

The biggest suggestion I could give to a parent considering this series for their child is to determine whether or not your child will be absolutely crushed by an ending that does not give the type of closure that most kids require after investing time and heart into 5 books. The author makes you feel like a part of the Underland family and just when you start to get to know your family....boom. It's all over, book 5 ends, things are sad, key characters are dead, and Gregor goes home with no indication from the author that he may return to the Underland. It's not the worst thing that could happen and I would still recommend the series but on an emotional level for young teens and older children there was not the level of emotional resolution that I feel most kids would hope for. Now, had this not been the last book it would be a different feeling but it seems it may be.
For mature folks and kids. Suzanne Collins carries a lot of what her father experienced into her books. The terrible destruction of war, the innocents but also those who risk their lives to create a better world. I cried as I cried when the other creatures lost their lives in the previous books. It can be so dismal reading this series when so many of the wonderful creatures the main character "bonds" with die awful deaths. But you keep going, you don't stop, you have to keep going to create a safer world. And I love, just love how the main character communicates with his bond animal.

And I love, just love the puzzles and clues the author leaves in the books. I wish the series could be placed in the hands of a director for a series of movies as the Harry Potter and Hunger Games.
As a whole, I'd rate this series five stars for its impressive setting and wonderful characters. Me and my little sisters love this series because of the characters. I personally can never get enough of Ripred. He's the best.

But I have to rate this last book four stars because of its conflicting ending.
